It’s Harder to Turn Scrollers Into Clients Than It Is to Turn Searchers Into Clients
I wish more women in business understood that it’s much harder to turn scrollers into clients than it is to turn searchers into clients. Why?
Scrolling is for mindless consumption…hey, no judgement here!
Searching is for something intentional.
And that difference changes everything about your marketing strategy.
If your visibility relies mainly on fast paced social content, you are constantly trying to interrupt someone who is distracted. But when you build long term, searchable content, you are meeting someone somewhere in the middle of their buying decision.
One requires convincing.
The other requires clarity.
The scrollers’ mindset
When someone is scrolling Instagram or TikTok, they are not actively looking to hire you. They are filling time. They are relaxing. They are consuming.
Sure, you might catch their attention. You might even spark some curiosity for them to check you out further. But the reality is, you are asking them to shift from entertainment to investment and that is a big jump! Also why you should never feel like you’re doing something wrong if you are having a hard time converting from social media.
The truth is, you can absolutely generate business from social media. But it often requires a lot more effort, more frequency, and more of your time and energy. You have to show up consistently. You have to repeat yourself. You have to stay visible.
And if you disappear for a few weeks (me, it’s me), momentum slows down, the algorithms do their thing. It’s just a lot.
The searchers’ mindset
Now imagine someone opening Google and typing:
“Functional nutritionist near me”
“How to get started with real estate investing”
“Life coaches for women in corporate jobs”
That person is not randomly browsing. They are actively looking for a solution.
They are closer to a decision.
They are warmer.
They are ready.
When your website and content are built to meet that very specific search, you are not convincing someone they need help. You are showing them you are the right person for the job.
What’s even better is that the person is not feeling sold to, they are feeling like they found you, and they’re empowered to make a buying decision.
Why compounding content changes the game
When you invest in evergreen content like blogs, guides, tutorials, and case studies, you are planting seeds that keep sprouting.
Each post becomes a searchable asset on the internet that can last months, or even years. Much better than the 24 hours we get with a Story on Instagram.
That is compounding visibility. Create it once, let it do its thing.
A simple example:
One of my clients, Karen, relied almost entirely on Facebook and Instagram for inquiries for years. She showed up consistently, like every single day, but leads were almost nonexistent.
We rebuilt her website to target a very specific type of client.
We added content targeting the local area she worked in.
Nothing hyped up, nothing that requires crashing your nervous system on social media.
A few months later, she booked a new coaching client who found her through Google! Her client was searching for life coaches in her area and voila, Karen was right there.
She still uses Instagram but now she is not dependent on it as a lifeline to get clients. Her website is doing work quietly, but powerfully in the background.
That is the difference between chasing attention and creating calm visibility.
How to balance social media and search engine marketing
You do not need to abandon social media because if you’re like me, it still feels important in many ways. You just need to stop putting it on a marketing pedestal. Let’s take a more search engine friendly approach instead and let Instagram and other social platforms be more for fun, sharing ideas, like a creative outlet.
Start here:
Identify the phrases or questions your ideal client likely types into Google before hiring someone like you.
Write in depth blog posts answering those questions and including those key phrases.
Optimize your service pages with clear, specific language.
Repurpose those blogs into social posts and Pinterest graphics that lead people back to your site.
See how much better that feels?
When your marketing strategy includes searchable content designed to last for years, you no longer panic when the algorithm changes, or worry about chasing every trendy clip on Instagram. It’s all about a calm, intentional approach that is in service to those who are ready to invest rather than trying to convince those who are trying to turn off their working brain.
